Traditionally, Japanese asymmetrical bows Yumi are made from bamboo or layers of wood and bamboo.
In the conditions of the Baltic climate, it is better to use Yumi made of fiberglass and carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is stiffer, lighter, and more expensive, while fiberglass is more flexible and more affordable. Fiberglass Yumi also vary in thickness, which increases with every kilogram of draw weight. It seems that fiberglass Yumi are not produced with a draw weight greater than 20 kg because they become too thick and heavy. Composite Yumi made of layers of carbon fiber and bamboo are also produced.
Yumi can be purchased in Japanese online stores, and there are also several European online stores.
A Yumi should be chosen individually according to your height and physical characteristics. However, in general, beginners should start training with Yumi with a draw weight of no more than 9–12 kg. The process of mastering basic Kyudo skills can take several years. Then, if desired, You can purchase a more powerful Yumi that will correspond to Your advanced skills.
A general rule for choosing the correct Yumi size: the bow grip (Nigiri) should be approximately at shoulder level when the kyudoka (Kyudo student) is in Kiza no kamae (sitting on the knees).

Below is a table to help You choose the correct Yumi size:
